I have been to this place many times, usually on Saturdays when I’m bunking over nearby. But I have always forgotten to blog about it although I have told many verbally. So to give my dear friends an easier way to locate the place I’m talking about, here is THE famous Segambut Fried Chicken Rice.
Located right smack in the middle of some shoplots, if you do not know this place beforehand, it would not be easy to find. It is afterall a simple shack with prison-like grills all around. However, it is decently clean (I didn’t want to go to the back and take a look. Better not know. Haha.) and not overly crowded unless you happen to pop by during the peak of lunch hour. There aren’t many tables so sometimes you just got to share.
The main dish here is of course the Fried Chicken Rice. Usually I ask for the thigh and they give you the entire thigh, freshly deep fried to perfect crispiness and yet maintaining the lovely juicy texture on the inside. You can opt to take the chicken with rice or not. The rice is your typical chicken rice type of fragrant pandan oily rice. During weekedays, you can also order some soup and my favourite is the salted stewed vegetable soup (Kiam chai boey). The only vegetables I tend to go for in the Fried Chicken Rice dish are the cucumbers that come with it as well as the Chinese parsley (yin sai); they really give a lot of it.
You don’t really need any sauce for the chicken, but for me, when it comes to chicken rice, I still need my usual garlic-lime-chilli mix; and they have it there. They also have this sort-of soy/fish oil sauce which is quite thin but you can douse your rice with it for extra flavor.
