It has been a while since I’ve wined and dined, and it was a pleasure to finally get back to it at Villa Danieli at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. It was a lovely wine-pairing session, that is also available to anyone who love wines and tasting the dishes that go best with it. This Italian dining experience features authentic Italian dishes, paired with specially selected Santa Margherita wines.
During the wine dinner at Villa Danieli, which I went together with Andrew, we were treated with five different wines from Santa Margherita vineyard. By the way, we didn’t get to shoot enough photos, since the bottles on display kept going missing during the session. Haha. Probably people kept putting them on their tables instead of leaving them there.
We started with a pre-dinner drink of Santa Margherita Brut Valdobiadene DOCG. This light, crisp bubbly was a great starter, especially since it is not too sour compared to many bubblies. Paired with a smoked duck breast bite-sized amouse buche with caramelised apple, mint and berries coulisse, this was an excellent starter to whet the tastebuds.
Dinner started with antipasto of button mushroom crusted with mascarpone and goat cheese served with rocket salad and herbs oil, as well as ox tongue timbale with gherkin, roasted cherry tomato, sour parsley pesto and balsamic reduction. I loved the ox tongue. It is not gross like how some might think, in fact, it is somewhat like eating beef that is very tender. To pair with these, we were served Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio D.O.C, a slightly sweet and light white wine.
We moved to heavier red wines next, with this Santa Margherita Chianti Classico D.O.C.G, with a strong oak taste to match with the squid ink agnaloti stuffed with cream cod in parmesan sauce and crispy shimeji pasta. The wine had a smokey aftertaste, but not as strong as you would get from a typical woody Shiraz.
I didn’t get to take photos of the next two wines, sorry about that. The bottle was nowhere to be found. Haha. Anyway, the next wine was also a red, Ca’del Bosco Carmenero; not as woody or smokey, but instead has a slight citrus aftertaste. Paired with a choice of main dishes such as crispy skinned salmon with spinach, chickpea, glazed Belgium endive and orange reduction or honey lamb ribs with gorgonzola mashed potato, roasted vegetable and natural jus.
The final wine (which bottle also went missing. lol) was a dessert liquor from Santa Margherita, the yummilicious Illyquore Coffee Liquor. It tastes just like a strong cup of espresso on ice, with a slight taste of alcohol. An almost perfect end to a great dinner experience. Of course, dessert drinks should also go with dessert, and in this case was lemon crème chiboust with sable crumble and strawberry sauce.
